What Are the Everglades—and Why Are They Important?
The Everglades is a connected South Florida wetland landscape shaped by slow-moving water. Everglades National Park protects part of that larger ecosystem. Understanding the difference helps explain both its ecology and the different places visitors can explore.
Is the Everglades a swamp or a river?
Neither word captures the whole landscape. Shallow water moves through broad marshes, while other areas support wooded wetlands, coastal habitats and open water. The name River of Grass describes the broad movement of water through sawgrass marshes; it does not mean every habitat looks alike.
The National Park Service’s hydrology overview explains how water connects freshwater, estuarine and marine environments. Water quantity, quality, timing and distribution all matter to restoration.
Where are the Everglades?
The Greater Everglades extends beyond the national park boundary. When planning a visit, choose a specific destination and meeting point rather than entering only “Everglades” into a map. Why does this ecosystem matter?
The park protects important sawgrass, mangrove and Florida Bay habitats. Its significance includes water resources, wildlife breeding habitat and cultural resources. The NPS summary of park significance introduces those connections. Conservation is about how these habitats function together, as well as the individual animals people come to see.
How should students study change?
Start with a question you can investigate: How does the amount of open water differ between two dates at the same location? Record location, date, recent weather and the source of each photograph. Describe the visible differences before proposing a cause. A dramatic photograph is valuable evidence of a moment, but it cannot establish a long-term regional trend on its own.
