What to Expect on a Private Everglades Tour from Miami
Booking your first Everglades airboat tour and not sure how the day works? This guide walks through it step by step: choosing a tour, getting to the dock or getting picked up, what happens on the water, and what to bring. Whether you're a family on vacation, a group celebrating something, or cruise passengers with a few free hours, you'll know what to expect before you arrive.
Step 1: Pick your tour length and time
All of our listed airboat tours are private. The boat is reserved for your group and your captain, and we don't add strangers. Daytime tours run 1, 1.5, 2 or 3 hours. They start at $200 for the first two guests on a one-hour tour, and each additional paying guest is $60. Kids 5 and under ride free, though every child still takes a seat. See all tour lengths and prices.
One hour is a good first look, and usually just right for young kids.
1.5 to 2 hours gives you more time for scenery, questions and photos.
Sunrise, sunset or night tours change the light and atmosphere. We're open 24 hours, but tours outside 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. need to be confirmed in advance. Compare private night airboat tours.
Most of our boats seat seven. Bigger groups ride in additional boats, and when enough boats are available everyone leaves together. See group airboat tours for how that works.
Step 2: Get to the dock, or let us drive
Driving yourself: Airboat tours leave from 5334 FL-90, Miami, FL 33185, on Tamiami Trail (US 41) just west of Miami. Parking is on site. Arrive 15–20 minutes before your tour, or 20–30 minutes early for larger groups. Check directions and arrival tips before you go.
Private van pickup: Don't want to rent a car? Add private round-trip transportation for $400 per van. Each van holds up to 13 guests, and it's available for groups of 4 or more on tours of 1.5 hours or longer. We pick up in Miami Beach, Brickell, Downtown Miami, Fort Lauderdale and the Keys, plus PortMiami. Pickup is usually about an hour before your tour starts. After the tour, we can take you back or drop you at MIA or FLL. We don't provide child seats, so bring any your kids need.
Step 3: At the dock
Your captain meets your group, gets everyone fitted with a life jacket and hearing protection, and gives a short safety briefing. Every one of our captains holds a U.S. Coast Guard license. Complimentary cold water is provided. If anyone in your group has mobility or boarding needs, call before you book so we can confirm the right setup.
Step 4: Out on the water
Once you leave the dock, you're gliding across open sawgrass marsh. Airboats are loud, which is why everyone gets ear protection. Your captain will slow down or stop to point things out and answer questions.
Alligators, wading birds and turtles are what most visitors look for. These are wild animals, so what you see and how close you get depend on conditions. Your captain adapts the route to the water and weather that day, and we never guarantee a particular sighting. On a private boat, you set the pace. If the kids spot something, you can stop and look.
Step 5: What to wear and bring
Comfortable clothes for the forecast and closed-toe shoes that stay on
Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat that fits securely
A light layer for early, sunset or night tours
A phone or camera with a way to protect it from spray
Keep loose items secured so nothing blows into the marsh. Our full what to wear and bring guide has more tips.
Cruise days and layovers
A private tour fits well before or after a cruise. Our dock is roughly 45–60 minutes from PortMiami, depending on traffic, and a 1.5-hour tour with terminal pickup and airport drop-off takes about half a day. Leave a generous buffer before any flight. See our cruise-day and layover tour for sample timelines.
Booking, payment and cancellation
Full payment is required to book. Cancel at least 24 hours before your tour for a full refund. Need a Spanish translator? Mention it when you book and we can arrange one. You can also read this information in Spanish.
First-timer questions
Is the boat really private?
Yes. Your tour is reserved for your group and your captain.
Can we bring a baby?
Yes. There's no minimum age, and every guest gets a life jacket and ear protection.
Which tour length should we choose?
One hour suits young kids and tight schedules. Choose 1.5 hours or longer if you want more time on the water or need hotel pickup.
Will we definitely see an alligator?
We can't promise it. Sightings depend on conditions, but your captain knows the area and will point out what's around.
