Alligator vs Crocodile in the Everglades
South Florida is home to both the American alligator and American crocodile. Alligators generally have broader snouts and favor freshwater habitats; American crocodiles have narrower snouts and are associated with coastal, brackish and saltwater habitats. Use several clues together rather than judging from one blurry photograph.

Will we see both on an airboat tour?
Do not plan around a guaranteed sighting of either animal. A tour visits a particular route under that day’s conditions, not every habitat across South Florida. Tell your captain if wildlife photography is your priority and ask what is realistic for your chosen departure.
Observe without approaching
Use binoculars or a camera zoom. Do not move closer to check teeth, touch an animal or offer food. Keep children supervised and follow the captain’s instructions. The park’s wildlife safety guidance gives additional context for visits to national park sites.
A classroom identification exercise
Compare two clearly credited photographs from the NPS profiles. List what is actually visible, then mark which clues are uncertain. Does the image show the whole snout? Is lighting changing the apparent color? Was the habitat recorded? Finish with a confidence statement instead of forcing an identification when the evidence is incomplete.
